In Topic: Republicans Declare War On Accurate Economic Data

The minimum sample sizes required, which for the monthly surveys might involve say 12,000 returns from a cohort who remain in the survey from three to five years. About the same ratio, I was always impressed by the commitment to data quality. We have fudged a couple, following the US lead. Overweight CPI deflators and the under counting inactive job seekers as not unemployed. They fight back. I much preferred working in the Dept of Science and Technology before hand. Afterwards I went to the State Library and ran a business for them, which more suited my style.

I used to work for the "Australian Bureau of Statistics". Explaining to irate citizens that the collection of data was about nation building, good public policy and the efficient allocation of public resources and not about "You, sir (or Madam)" (or your F**king paranoid dumbass fears that yr busted, ya crook) was the fun bit.

The superpower competition was evident in the seventies, you couldn't travel anywhere without seeing that this bridge was donated by the people of the US and that road by the USSR. One is curious about the extent to which a CIA intervention and US money was responsible for the over reaction by the Soviets and subsequent invasion. Fighting the cold war in Afghanistan via proxies was costly for those who accepted "help" in the end, anyway.

The society is utterly broken by the Pashtunwali, feudalism and its dependence on drug income. It was beautiful in 1978. The russians were nasty but the civil war was worse. It can make progress  but when you add superpower competition, billion dollar budgets and foreign troops and the War for covert drug income its like putting all the worse elements there on meth.  It's about Iran and Russia and the gulf, I guess.
